- Some basic knowledge for blackjack players: you can split a pair of 2s and a pair of 3s against a dealer’s 4, 5, 6, or 7. But you shall not split a pair of 9s against a dealer’s 7 or 10. If you dealt a pair of 6s, and the dealer has cards 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, you should split. In another case, take another card.
- In Face up blackjack you should split tens vs. Dealer’s 13, 14, 15 and 16. Card Counting: If you count cards, then you should split 10s when the deck is rich in 10s. On true count of +5 you should split vs. Dealer’s 5 and 6. Bottom line: unless you are playing Double Exposure or counting cards, never split 10s. We promise that if you stick to this rule, in the end of day you will have more chips in front of you, which is pretty much the point.
- You should also split your 10s when the dealer shows a hand of 6 total, but only if you feel comfortable counting cards and the card count is +6. The odds are in your favor when you split a pair of 10s as opposed to the dealer’s 6 during a +6 card count.
According to basic strategy, you should split 9s against every numeric card a dealer holds, except for a 7. The reason is that if the dealer holds a seven, he stands a great chance of holding a 10 hole card and will stand on his hard 17, thus your 9-9 will win.
